TRAINING To become a Journeyman, an apprentice is required to fulfill a combination of hands-on and formal training. An apprentice must attend several years of schooling sponsored by the Union at the Builder’s Training Center. In addition, the apprentice must work in the field for a minimum of hours. The training schedule is mandatory to continue working for a contractor. Apprentices must possess a high school diploma or GED, be at least 18 years old and pass a drug test. Before applying for an apprenticeship an individual should be aware that this trade must be able to work in small areas, be comfortable working in high places and tolerate extreme temperatures in the heat of summer and the cold of winter. This trade is a physically demanding and detailed trade so individuals must be capable of precise workmanship while adhering to production guidelines.
